Magnitude 6.6 Quake Jolts Indonesian Waters

(MENAFN) A significant 6.6 magnitude earthquake jolted waters off western Indonesia's Sumatra Island during the early morning hours Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic event occurred at 4:56 a.m. local time, originating at a depth of 25.4 kilometers (15.7 miles) beneath the ocean floor. The epicenter was located approximately 45 kilometers (27.9 miles) west-northwest of Sinabang town, situated along the eastern coastline of Simeulue Island.

No immediate reports of structural damage, injuries, or fatalities had emerged at the time this report was filed. Local authorities continue monitoring the situation as they assess potential impacts on coastal communities in the affected region. The tremor's moderate depth and offshore location may have reduced its destructive potential on populated areas.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity and volcanic eruptions throughout the year.
