Indonesia's Mount Semeru at Level III Alert Status
Straddling the boundary of Lumajang and Malang districts, the volcano—which has maintained heightened activity throughout recent years—currently operates under Level III alert designation, a state-run news agency reported.
"An eruption occurred on Sunday, 2025, at 5:46 am local time (2246GMT Saturday), with an observed column height of 1,200 meters above the summit," said Liswanto, an officer at the Mt. Semeru Observation Post in Lumajang.
Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has urged residents to cease all activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, throughout a 13 km (8 miles) perimeter from the peak.
"The public is also prohibited from activities within a 5 km (3.11 miles) radius of the crater due to the risk of ejected rocks," Liswanto added.
Monitoring data documented eruption plumes fluctuating in altitude, spanning 500 meters (1,640 feet) to 1,200 meters.
Towering 3,676 meters (12,060 feet) above sea level, Semeru ranks among Indonesia's most volatile volcanoes, with an eruption record that has periodically resulted in fatalities.
Indonesia sits upon the Pacific "Ring of Fire"—a seismically volatile region hosting over 120 active volcanoes.
